A TALE FROM THE ROAD:

A youngish doofus on a fancy road bike plopped right in front of me at a red light on Devon and Glenwood today. He had been a few blocks behind but jumped ahead while I waited at the red light. This practice is called “shoaling” and it’s very uncouth.

Annoyed, I decided to speed by him when the light turned green. I did this because I was riding my dinky 20″-wheeled folding bike, and I knew it would bruise his ego.

I passed him. It bruised his ego. So he tries racing me down Glenwood. Foldilocks and I hold him off, because folding bikes have heart. But then we reach a stop sign, where a a tractor trailer ahead of us was turning left.

What to do? Like a sane person, I slow down to remain behind the tractor trailer. But the doofus squeezes past the truck on the right while it’s making a left turn. Truck makes wide turns! Very dangerous!

No, he didn’t get smushed. But the point of the story: this guy, bad.

OVERALL COMMUTE RATING:

3/4. Deja vu. Nice day with unfortunate wind.

June 5 bike forecast: a bit too windy

Monday: cooler than Sunday, thank God. But a little windy, too.

MONDAY WEATHER INFOGRAPHIC:unnamed.jpg

Overall: high 69, low 52, 70% humidity

AM: high 60s, sunny, wind from the north at 12 MPH

PM: low 60s, partly cloudy, winds from the north at 18 MPH.

If you’re commuting to the north in the afternoon, my condolences.

FELINE WIND REPRESENTATION:

Windy enough to knock a plastic thing off a cat’s head.

RECOMMENDED WIND GEAR OF THE DAY:aero9w.jpg

Why? Because I saw three (three!) people wearing these time-trial helmets around Edgewater this weekend. Do the aerodynamic benefits outweigh the costs? (i.e. being a dork.)

DIVVY REPORT: All stations operational.

3/4. So nice except for the wind. Oy.

June 2 bike forecast: Whoa. Again.

Let’s preface this bike forecast by thanking the meteorologico-cycling deities for Thursday. Thanks.

Our take on Thursday?

“A nice climate day for man, a shitty climate day for mankind.”

Now onto Friday… which, luckily, should be just about as nice. Yeah. You heard it here first.

Could it be? PEAK BIKE CONDITIONS? Again?

The sunglasses aren’t a fashion statement. Because it’s gonna be really sunny tomorrow.

3.95/4. So close.

Why no perfect score? High of 81º raises sweatiness prospects a bit too high.

That being said: if you don’t ride your bike tomorrow, you’re a chump.

May 30 bike forecast: nice

Solemn post-Memorial Day, everyone. Now you can look forward to a nice day to ride a bike tomorrow.

May 24th bike forecast: more rain

Wednesday: like Tuesday, but worse. Rainy, windy, lame.

In news: in case there were doubts before, the detour is officially in effect on Lake Front Trail between Diversey and North. According to one Chainlink user:

The detour is pretty well marked surprisingly enough.

The mornings tend to be a lot lighter traffic, but there were less people on the detour than I normally see on the LFT.  We’ll see how it is in the afternoon.

Unfortunately we never heard how it was in the afternoon. (We’re guessing wet!!!!)

WEDNESDAY WEATHER INFOGRAPHIC:

unnamed.jpg

Overall: high 56, low 50, windy from the north, rain likely

AM: mid 50s, cloudy, rain likely, wind 9 MPH from the north

PM: mid 50s, cloudy, rain possibly, pretty windy from the north

Ride of Silence is Tomorrow, May 17th

Tomorrow is the annual Ride of Silence. The purpose is to raise awareness of cyclists’ rights and honor cyclists who have been killed in crashes. (7 cyclists were killed in Chicago in the past year.)

Details:

6:30 PM

Start: Daley Plaza

Finish: Ghost Bike at Lincoln and Addison, with a post-ride gathering at Burrito House (3547 N. Lincoln Ave).

Riders are requested to wear black armbands, or red if you’ve been in a bike/car crash. Helmets are required.

May 7 bike forecast: Sunny, chilly, good.

Monday: a welcome contrast to the clouds, wind, and rain of last week.

Some might complain about the unseasonably cold weather. But us? We like the anti-sweatiness benefits.

MONDAY WEATHER INFOGRAPHIC:
